If you do a quick search on the word resilience in wikipedia you will realize that there are many different definitions depending on area you are interested in. The is a definition from a psychological perspective, from a scientific perspective, from an ecological perspective and many more. The resilience that this article looks at is Organizational Resilience.
Organizational Resilience is defined as “the positive ability of a system or company to adapt itself to the consequences of a catastrophic failure caused by power outage, a fire, a bomb or similar” event. What is critical, I believe, is to note that resiliency is the capability or ability and not a framework or process. The similarities between Organizational Resilience and Business Continuity cannot be denied. They both describe the need for organizations to have the ability or capability to respond, recover, resume and normalize business operations after suffering from a disaster.
Recently, there has been a push for some quarters that Organizational Resilience (OR) is the direction to go as it is all encompassing and truly provides benefits to organization. Business continuity is only but one aspect under the OR umbrella. There is also proposal for an ISO standard to be developed. I believe in light of these strong waves of new directions, the author of this article has highlighted some of his thoughts on this matter.
There some good points which he has raised and there are some good points raised by the readers at the bottom of this article.
